Programmes

Through our programmes in science, technology and engineering we aim to inspire our students and equip them with a solid academic foundation that they can continuously build on. We believe that inspiration, imagination, exploration, practical doing, creative design and the mastering of theory are all important elements of a pre-engineering academy. On the one hand, forcing students to partake in the learning without them having a desire for it proves ineffective. On the other hand, only playing around with new and exciting technologies without laying a solid academic foundation leads nowhere.

The correct balance between general exploration and specific instruction depends a lot on where the individual student is in his/her knowledge and development. Also, in early primary school a greater focus on play is warranted, while from the senior phase onwards students can handle a greater level of abstraction and grappling with the theoretical underpinnings of subjects.

Rossum Academy offers four different programmes, with different focus areas. While the programmes are all complimentary, and it would be ideal to take part in all of them to some extent, students can primarily choose to follow a programme that correlates best with their interest and aptitude.

The four different programmes are:

Building Studio
An environment where students can, at their own pace, choose from more than 250 projects what they want to build. The projects vary from very basic to university level. This is similar to owing more than R100 000 worth of equipment and software.

Engineering Concepts
A pre-engineering curriculum that contains elements of physics, mathematics, mechanics, electronics and computer programming. It is recommended that all students at some stage attend the Engineering Concepts programme as it contains the core concepts of science, technology and engineering.

Digital Art & Design
A programme that allows creativity and design flair to be expressed through the means of computer technology. Students can learn about 2D & 3D design, making videos and music and even create their own websites and computer games.

Frontiers of Technology
The programme provides exposure to some of the latest and most interesting applications of technology. Besides stimulation, students can contribute to a range of very exciting projects that Rossum is busy with.
